Yes, almost played out. LEDs are where it's at, except for laser powered lights of course.

You beat me to it. The other day I was about to get on the bus and while I was on the line I noticed not only do they have HIDs but also LED running lights and turn signals!

LEDs are surpassing HID, but not entirely yet.

LED focused housings and high-output emitters are still expensive for automotive use, and you have to use LEDs right to surpass the output of a HID capsule.

LEDs of that grade of light output get HOT on the back... so they sometimes require active cooling, which makes the fixtures even more complex and expensive.

HID is still sound technology, and much better than Halogen, and sound technology doesn't get "played out", it gets utilized.

Some states/cities do. Here in Milwaukee we did for a long time until they disappeared for some reason. I rode one once as a child, sat in the middle next to a potential child molester. My mom yelled at me and told me not to sit there, but I wanted to sit in the bendy part. Looked like fun.

They're around, but kind of rare. You have to have enough density on bus routes to justify running something with that capacity.

When I visited Boston, my uncle told me to stand in the bendy part of the subway, as the cars are all basically one long hallway. It was fun.

Heck we even have a couple in our tiny college town. Apparently the first place in SC to have them as well.
